Abstract: After the adjustment of policies on traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)at the 1950s,Guangdong province collected snakebite prescriptions through offering prescriptions, gathering information and holding Snake Herbalist Experience Exchange Meeting, and held Guangdong Provincial Training Course on the Treatment of Venomous Snake Bites for promotion. The snake herbalists have undergone a change of status and became formal doctors, assisting in the research on snakebite prescriptions. After that,Guangdong province formulated a collaborative plan and sent medical research units to various places in Guangdong to collect, sort and screen folklore snakebite prescriptions, and conduct collaborative research to improve them into convenient dosage forms.During this period,Guangzhou held two national snakebite academic conferences, hosted the national snakebite medicine experience exchange workshop, and realized cross-provincial exchanges and collaborative research. After the clinical introduction of antivenom serum for snakebites, medical institutions in Guangdong province diverged in their approach towards traditional Chinese herbal medicine,TCM snakebite remedies, and antivenom serum.Using the history compiled from contemporary research on Guangdong snakebite treatments as an example, this article reflects the complex relationship between TCM and Western medicine in the evolution of contemporary Chinese medical practices.
