Abstract: Acupuncture is one of the widely used therapies within the realm of complementary and alternative medicine due to its ease of operation, safety and notable clinical effectiveness.Electroencephalogram(EEG)serves as a neuroimaging technique characterized by its ability to provide high temporal resolution. This technique enables the real-time monitoring of brain functional activities and has been increasingly employed in research to investigate the mechanism underlying the effects of acupuncture on the brain within recent years.Literature review revealed that the EEG detection and analysis are mainly employed to investigate the specificity of meridian and acupoint effects. This approach aims to explore the EEG response patterns associated with acupuncture at various acupoints as well as to examine the mechanism underlying the effect of acupuncture.Furthermore, the analysis could applied to elucidate the EEG response characteristics of acupuncture in both physiological state and pathological states;to study the determinants of acupuncture efficacy and assess the influence of various specific or non-specific factors on the acupuncture therapy from the EEG perspective;to study the prediction of acupuncture effectiveness and to explore the potential application of EEG markers as a quantitative assessment measure for predicting acupuncture prognosis. This study provides an overview of the application of EEG in the scientific research of acupuncture and provides evidence for the scientific research and clinical application of EEG in acupuncture therapy.
