Relief of low back pain in certain cases following stripping of the muscles of the back is due to extensive denervation of the posterior rami or recurrent meningeal branches of the spinal nerves. However, destruction of the muscles of antigravity will alter the normal angle of forward inclination of pelvis of 30 degrees, thus convert a normal posture into a pathological one, either a flat back or a sway back, depending on whether the angle of inclincation is less or more than 30 degrees. Moreover, paralysis or weakness of muscles of the back will result in osteoporosis of the spine which is liable to fracture and there will be potential danger of neuropathic arthritis of the posterior articulation of spine or sacro-iliac joint on account of loss of the proprioceptive impulses.
