Hydroxyethyl-starch (HES, or 706 plasma substitute) is a new type of plasma substitute which has widely been used clinically with good efficacy. During 1973-1974 we used HES with various mean molecular weights to observe its hemo-dynamic and hemo-rheological effects and its influence on the blood clot system of 24 dogs in a state of hemorrhagic shock, The items observed in detail were: blood pressure, ESR, plasma visocity, blood volume, the amount of HES retained in blood stream and HES effects on micro-circulation, as well as plasma clot time, clot contraction time, prothrombin time, re-calcification time, blood clot time, etc.
